What is the Trans Justice Fellow position at the ACLU of Oregon?
As of the date of this posting (May 12, 2026), we are seeking to fill one Trans Justice Fellow position.

Summary of this position:
Transgender justice is a priority area of work for the ACLU of Oregon. The Trans Justice Fellow position will support our work in this area while gaining experience in organizing, communications, and education.

The team member in this position is a relationship builder, a project manager and planner, a doer and implementer, and a problem solver and clear communicator who is detail and deadline-oriented, capable, self-motivated, proactive, supportive, and very organized.

This is a 9-month, limited-term, non-exempt position based in the Portland metropolitan area. This position is limited to 9 months and cannot be extended beyond this period of time.

The successful candidate must have the ability to accommodate a variable work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed, and to travel to events and meetings throughout the state. The candidate must reside in the Portland metro area of Oregon or be willing to relocate to the Portland metro area by when the position begins.

We prefer candidates who are able to work full-time (40 hours per week) but will consider candidates who can work at least 20 hours or more per week.

Who this position works with: The Trans Justice Fellow will work on our Campaigns team under the supervision of the Campaigns Director, while also working closely, collaboratively, and supportively with all teams and areas of the ACLU of Oregon.

What are the qualifications required for this position?

We are looking for individuals with the following experience, abilities, and values:

  • Required community engagement & organizing experience: At least six months to one year of relevant experience in the following —
    • Prior demonstrated experience in organizing; and
    • Prior demonstrated commitment to transgender and gender identity and expression related justice issues.
  • Required: valid driver's license; during the position, resides in the Portland metro area of Oregon.
  • Highly preferred: access to a vehicle with relevant automobile insurance; familiarity with Oregon.
  • Required equity and inclusion values and experience: Prior commitment to and experience with work, volunteering, or other efforts that align with and further the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and efforts to prevent and stop all forms of discriminatory oppression.
  • Required values: a demonstrated ability to support the goals, priorities, and values of the ACLU of Oregon, including the following values related to building work-related relationships and trust:
    • Sincerity: the assessment that you are honest, that you say what you mean and mean what you say. The idea that you can be believed and taken seriously and that your actions are aligned with your words.
    • Reliability: the assessment that you meet the commitments you make, and that you keep your promises.
    • Competence: the assessment you have the ability to do what you’re doing or propose to do. Note that being competent does not mean being perfect. Part of doing something well is knowing what you don’t know how to do, being willing to learn, and asking for help when you need it.
    • Care: the assessment you have the other person’s interest in mind as well as your own when you make decisions and take actions.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience: We will consider applicants who can demonstrate non-traditional work-related experiences comparable to more direct forms of work experience or education.

What are the pay & benefits for this position?
This is an hourly position. The hourly rate is $31.51.
