The event was kicked off by board member Nancy Ross who invited all our volunteer attorneys from the past year onto the stage to thank them for their enormous contributions to civil liberties in Oregon. Special recognition went to Steven Wilker of the Tonkon Torp law firm. Steven is an ACLU board member, chairs the lawyers committee and will represent the ACLU of Oregon before the Supreme Court of the United States later this month.

Matt Bors got the audience laughing and applauding with a slide presentation of his witty and insightful political cartoons. Keynote Speaker Ben Wizner was introduced by journalist Glenn Greenwald via video from Brazil. Ben’s keynote focused on how defending free speech and our right to privacy is both complicated and crucial when technology is evolving so much faster than the law. Though we have been fighting an uphill battle for a long time - particularly where the NSA is concerned - the revelations that Edward Snowden brought to light have dramatically changed the playing field.

Again, we thank everyone who supported this event that raised nearly $95,000 for our legal and educational programs.
