Senate Bill 488 would provide access to an annual flu shot for individuals incarcerated in Oregon's prisons and jail. This bill allows for incarcerated Oregonians the choice of whether to take the flu shot, which is an important safeguard to respect autonomy in making health care decisions.
Making the flu shot available to everybody incarcerated in the state is both humane and cost effective. Not doing so can lead to senseless deaths and suffering.
Note: This bill was amended to only apply to people incarcerated in Department of Corrections facilities. As amended, it will not apply to local correctional facilities. While we would have preferred the original bill, we still see the amended bill as an important step in the right direction.
