This is Doug Brown, the ACLU of Oregon's newest employee. I'd like to take a minute and say hello.

I'm thrilled to have joined the ACLU of Oregon as a communications associate, helping to spread the word about civil liberties in the state and the important work being done by an organization I've long admired. What a time to be at the ACLU.

My background is in journalism. A few of you may know me from my two years as a Portland Mercury news reporter. I was on the front lines of nearly all the massive post-election protests, reporting on and photographing the Portland Police Bureau's often-brutal responses. I covered jail issues and problems with the criminal justice system. I wrote about immigration and ICE. I covered police oversight meetings. I was the first to expose Jeremy Christian and Russell Courtier as white supremacists after they were arrested for separate murders.

I'm from the Midwest. I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and then lived in Ohio for college (political science at Hiram College), graduate school (journalism at Kent State), and work (Cleveland Scene, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Deadspin, and more) prior to moving to Oregon.

And now I'm here at the ACLU of Oregon, helping to advance causes you and I are so passionate about. Please feel free to contact me any time at dbrown@aclu-or.org if you ever want to get in touch.

While you're here, please do me a favor and make sure you're following the ACLU of Oregon on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Now let's get to work.

Join us for a rally to protect net neutrality in Oregon!

The Trump admin dismantled important protections, but Oregon can still save net neutrality by passing HB 4155!

What is Net Neutrality?
In December, the Trump FCC voted to dismantle policies that protected the open internet. What you can see on the internet, along with the quality of your connection, are at risk. If the FCC has its way, those companies could disfavor controversial viewpoints or smaller websites and favor the content providers who have the money to pay for better access.

Network neutrality is a consumer issue, but it is also one of the foremost free speech issues of our time. It is pretty much impossible to get through life without using the internet anymore, so it's essential that our free speech rights are protected both on- and offline. Freedom of expression isn't worth much if the forums where people actually make use of it are not themselves free.
