This brief statement was first posted to our social media accounts:

We are saddened and disgusted by the violence and senseless killing in Charlottesville today.

We condemn violence. We unequivocally reject white supremacy in all its forms and commit to actively fight against it in our work everyday.

We understand the urge to condemn the ACLU for standing up for the First Amendment rights of people whose opinions and views we simultaneously condemn. We defend the rights of all people, even those we don't agree with because we know that in order for the Constitution to work, it must work for everyone.

But let's be real. The Constitution isn't working for everyone. We know that. That's why we must organize and fight against white supremacy.

Tonight we take to the streets in solidarity with Charlottesville. ACLU of Oregon legal observers are out in Portland. Come out and raise your voice. Take a stand against hate.

Over 100 people came out for the launch of They Report to You, a major initiative to make Oregon’s criminal justice system more effective, fair and accountable. Read more about the campaign at our new website www.theyreporttoyou.org

2017 has already been a landmark year for reforming Oregon’s criminal justice system. With the support of thousands of ACLU members and in partnership with others — including the Oregon Association Chiefs of Police and the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association — we passed laws to help end law enforcement profiling, reduce unreasonably harsh penalties for simple possession of drugs, slow the expansion of our prison population and make our grand jury system more transparent and accountable.

It’s a new day and a new political landscape! We are building momentum and are far from done. Our new campaign, They Report to You, is designed to make our criminal justice system more accountable to everyday people — and redefine what accountability in our criminal justice system means.

We believe district attorneys especially need to be held more accountable because they’re the most powerful people in the criminal justice system and have the ability to reform it — or maintain the status quo. Many people don’t know who district attorneys are, what they do, why they’re so powerful or how we can hold them accountable.

Join us for lunch and learn how you can get involved with They Report to You. Afterwards, we will hit the streets on our first volunteer canvass for district attorney accountability. Sign up today!
